The fastest path, and the path you keep
Railway and Render are excellent at one thing. You connect a repository and get a running service on their cloud a few minutes later, with no cloud account to set up. For a prototype, a side project or an early product, that speed is hard to beat.
Ankra keeps the same starting point and changes where the app lives. ankra application ship takes a repository to a live URL, but the URL points at Kubernetes in your own account, on the provider you pick. That matters once cost, data location or a customer contract decides where software may run.
Choose Railway or Render to get something live today on someone else’s servers. Choose Ankra when the app has to run on infrastructure you choose and keep.
Where the app runs
Railway runs on infrastructure it owns and says it is not a bring-your-own-cloud platform, although its pricing page lists that option for Enterprise contracts. Render runs on its own cloud too. In Europe, Railway has one region in Amsterdam and Render has one in Frankfurt.
Ankra builds Kubernetes on Hetzner, OVHcloud, UpCloud, DigitalOcean, AWS EC2 and Proxmox VE, creates EKS, GKE, AKS and three more provider services, or imports a cluster you already run. The servers and the bill are yours, in any region your provider offers. If you outgrow one provider, Cloud Cost prices the same cluster on the others.
Shipping the code
Both PaaS products build on push and deploy automatically, and both offer pull-request environments. Railway’s PR environments are created when a pull request opens and deleted when it closes. Render’s full-stack previews need its Pro plan.
Ankra’s Applications analyse your repository and open a setup pull request with a Dockerfile if you need one, manifests and CI. Ankra Pipelines run tests, rootless builds and Semgrep, Checkov and Trivy scans inside your own cluster, and only the image that passed the gate is published. Pull-request previews can include a throwaway Postgres. Applications and previews work with GitHub repositories today.
Databases and the rest of the platform
Databases are a real strength of both PaaS products. Railway maintains Postgres, MySQL, Redis and MongoDB templates with backups, and Render offers managed Postgres and key-value services. Ankra’s managed services, including PostgreSQL, are in closed beta. Until then, you run a database operator from the catalogue and Ankra backs it up to a bucket you own.
Beyond the app, Ankra treats the cluster as a platform. Stacks install any Helm chart in dependency order. The Security Center ranks vulnerabilities in running workloads by CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue and FIRST’s EPSS scores. The AI assistant diagnoses failures and proposes fixes that a person approves. Railway and Render both offer MCP servers for AI tools, and Railway has an agent in its CLI.
Compliance
Railway lists SOC 2 Type II, SOC 3 and HIPAA, and Render’s pricing lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. Ankra is not yet audited. With Ankra your data stays in your own account and region, and the control plane is hosted in the EU, but if a certified vendor is a requirement today, the PaaS products have it.
When to choose Ankra, and when to choose Railway or Render
Choose Ankra when the app must run in your own cloud account or region, you want to choose the provider and server prices yourself, including European providers, or you need the platform around the app, including add-ons, security ranking, backups and cost, as it grows.
Choose Railway or Render when
- you want a live URL today with no cloud account at all
- managed databases with one click matter more than where the servers are
- you need a SOC 2 certified vendor now
- the app is small enough that bundled compute pricing is simpler than a separate cloud bill
Many teams start on a PaaS and move later. Ankra’s Docker Compose migration and Applications take the same repository onto your own infrastructure.
Compare the work that remains
- Ship the same repository. Time it from connecting the repository to a live URL.
- Open a pull request. Check the preview and any database it needs.
- Restore a database. Note where backups live and who can restore them.
- Place the data. Confirm the region and who holds the servers.
- Compare total cost. PaaS prices include compute. With Ankra, add your provider’s server bill to Ankra’s fee per worker vCPU.
